My husband and I are from Canada but have served in Mexico, Costa Rica and now Guatemala for more than 20 years. We love living in different cultures and enjoying our differences yet part of the same family when we serve Jehovah together. After a few years and much effort we more or less speak Spanish. We have a cozy apartment in Nanaimo, BC where we live in and work a couple months of the year, and the rest of the year we rent it to help pay the rest of the bills.
5 things I can't live without? 1st two that come to mind are 1) obviously Jehovah and 2) my hope. The rest took a bit of thought but here they are 3) being able to read. 4) running water 5) good friends. My husband is built in to the "good friends" point :D
Favourite travel destination? Really can't say since I love everywhere I have ever been and always hope to return one day! I have been loving getting to know Guatemala over the past 3 years. I have read it is one of the best kept travel secrets, very beautiful and still cheaper than most travel destinations. We have climbed a couple volcanoes, swam in some crystalline waterfalls, rivers and lakes and tasted some wonderful new foods. Still more on the list to do and see when we have a little time but who feels pressured when you've got forever :)
Favorite books, movies, ok now you are just asking me to think too hard 😄 But I do love a good mystery or a good movie that makes me think about how it would be to have lived in a different period in history. And I do love love a rainy cold day if I can stay at home curled up in a blanket with a cup of tea and a good book! And I also love a beautiful sunny blue sky day on my bicycle!
What are we like as guests? Ok, a little funny to be rating ourselves, but we have used Airbnb for travelling for many years and everyone always says nice things about us :D So I guess the experience will be nice for you, hee 🤭 But we do love people wherever we go and even more so Jehovah's people.
As hosts we will be good communicators to help you decide if you want to stay in our place. We will be working to have a self check in system for you and also have a place to park if you have a car. We just won't be around for you to meet personally, since we do live in Guatemala. But we have lots of friends here to help if you run into a glitch, and we are close to the Kingdom Hall where you can also make some more friends of your own 😉
Life motto: When I look back on my life from an arm chair I can no longer get out of, I want to have a heart that is full of good memories and not a house full of stuff. So I work hard to keep my life simple.
My spiritual goals. Well thanks to Jehovah I have accomplished many of the big things I wanted. Pioneering where the need is great, learning a new language, learning to be more grateful, compassionate, forgiving, learning to be a friend, starting conversations, informal witnessing. Still working on some of those to mind you. But I don't really have any big goals now (not too much time left for all that since Ken will be 65 in a couple years and still doesn't have a desire to go to "school" SKE) although I would like to go somewhere, some day to participate in relief efforts. I guess it's still a big goal to stay focused on the end goal. I so badly want to know how it will be to live the "real life" and that is a pretty big goal to keep trying everything in my power to stay on track to be there. Small goals are to keep trying to read my Bible every day, cause I do good for a long while - and then not for a bit 🙃 And also keep working on not talking too much. Keeping my interest on others and who they are and how they feel and don't worry too much about me.
